Tyler Bream, Steven Evans, Jeff Jefferson and Mark Swanson have been selected captains for the 2011 Baseball team.
Liberty Head Baseball Coach Jim Toman has announced that pitchers Steven Evans and Mark Swanson, outfielder Jeff Jefferson and third baseman Tyler Bream have been named captains for the 2011 Liberty Baseball team. The four were selected by virtue of a team vote, with the quartet receiving overwhelming support from their teammates. Evans, a senior and four-year member of the Liberty pitching staff, comes off a strong year in 2010, posting a 9-2 record with a 3.01 ERA over 89.2 innings. Setting a career-low, the left-hander had the third-lowest ERA in the Big South Conference last season. Meanwhile, his win total and innings pitched were career highs. Evans also had a career-high 85 strikeouts. He was named to the 2010 Big South All-Tournament team after going the distance in a 7-2 opening game victory over Winthrop on May 26. Swanson, also a senior, enters the 2011 season after sitting out last year with an arm injury. The right-hander was a welcomed addition to the Liberty mound staff in 2009, with a 4-0 record and a 2.79 ERA in 38.2 innings. Swanson showed excellent control, striking out 35 and walking just eight batters. He also has earned Big South Presidential Honor Roll mention each of his two years at Liberty. Jefferson, the final senior of the quartet, is also a four-year member of the Flames. The outfielder has a career .283 batting average, 49 RBIs and 70 runs scored. Last season, he hit .238 with nine RBIs and 21 runs scored in 34 games. He had seven doubles and two home runs. Jefferson was named to the 2008 Big South All-Tournament team and is a two-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll member. Bream, a junior, has been a fixture at third base for the Flames, starting every game since joining the program in 2009. Last season, Bream was selected to the Big South All-Conference second team after setting the Liberty single-season record for hits with 96. His hit total also paced the Big South Conference. The third baseman batted .357 with 57 RBIs, 56 runs, 22 doubles and nine home runs. Bream is a two-time member of the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.
"I think our team has chosen four outstanding individuals to lead them this spring," said Toman. "The four have all proven to be good leaders and are well-respected by all of their teammates."
Liberty opens its 2011 campaign on Feb. 18 in Macon, Ga., against the Mercer Bears. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Flames will open their home schedule on March 4 against Binghamton. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
