Liberty redshirt seniors Sam Chelanga and Evans Kigen have officially been included among the list of participants for the 2010 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, scheduled for Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. Chelanga and Kigen placed first and second, respectively, at Saturday's NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships in Louisville, Ky., earning their spots on the starting line at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. They were the only pair of teammates to finish 1-2 at any of the nine NCAA Division I men's regional meets this weekend, and they did so in impressive fashion. Chelanga became a four-time NCAA regional cross country individual champion, with his winning 10K clocking of 29:55.8. He crossed the finish line 16 seconds ahead of Kigen, who will make his second consecutive trip to the national meet. Kigen came in seven seconds ahead of third-place Soufiane Bouchikhi of Eastern Kentucky. Liberty joins Air Force as the only two men's cross country teams in the nation sending multiple individual qualifiers to Terre Haute. Two Falcons qualified out of the Mountain Region on Saturday. The Flames will have two men's representatives at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships for the third consecutive year. Chelanga and Jordan McDougal qualified in 2008, and both Chelanga and Kigen raced in Terre Haute a season ago. Chelanga and Kigen will both attempt to follow up on stellar performances at the 2009 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Chelanga won his first NCAA Division I national championship, while Kigen also earned All-America honors with a 20th-place finish. The men's 10K national championship race will begin at 12:48 p.m. on Nov. 22 and will be video streamed live on NCAA.com.
