Bethany Wakeley was the top finisher in two individual events Saturday, as Liberty defeated VMI and fell to Gardner-Webb.
The Liberty Lady Flames swimming team added another win under its belt, defeating VMI (169-16), while falling to Gardner-Webb (132-73), Saturday afternoon, at its second and final home meet of the season. The victory over VMI marks the Lady Flames' first-ever home win at the LaHaye Aquatics Center. Liberty won five out of 11 overall events in the split, and improves to 3-2 on the year. The Lady Flames were victorious in four individual events and one relay. Bethany Wakeley led the team, picking up first-place finishes in the 200y freestyle (1:58.96) and the 100y butterfly (1:00.80), while Brye Ravettine was the fastest swimmer in the 50y freestyle with a time of 24.38, a season-best. Liberty's fourth individual win was in the 100y freestyle, as Lindsey Romkes finished with a time of 54.60. Ravettine and Romkes also teamed up with Dani Fletcher and Sarah McCorkle to take top honors in the 200y freestyle relay, finishing just ahead of Gardner-Webb's A team (1:39.92 to 1:39.96). The Liberty team's time was a season-best for the group. Both VMI and Gardner-Webb's men's swimming teams also competed, with the Runnin' Bulldogs coming out on top by a 127-76 score. Liberty will compete in its final meet of the fall at the Radford Invitational, Nov. 18-20 in Radford, Va.
