Due to the football team's bye week, this week's Flames Sports Hotline will feature a different look. Alan York will welcome head men's basketball coach Dale Layer and head women's basketball coach Carey Green, to preview their teams' upcoming seasons.
The Flames Sports Hotline, a weekly radio call-in show, returns this Tuesday night at 7 p.m. New for the 2010 season, the Flames Sports Hotline will air weekly on Victory FM (88.3 FM), the flagship station for the Flames Sports Radio Network.
The weekly show is hosted locally in Lynchburg on Liberty University's campus at Doc's Diner, and the restaurant is open to the general public. The show is broadcast live throughout the 50's-style diner and fans are encouraged to participate during the call-in segments.
York, the new radio "Voice of the Flames," will host the 60-minute call-in show. Layer will join him for the first 40 minutes, and Green will be featured for the final 20 minutes.
Layer returns for his second season at the helm of the Liberty men's basketball team, after guiding the Flames to a 15-16 record in 2009-10. His team was picked to finish sixth in the Big South Conference at last week's Big South Basketball Media Day in Charlotte.
The backcourt should be a strength of this year's team, led by returning starters Jesse Sanders and Evan Gordon. Sanders, a junior point guard, posted 8.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 4.9 apg a year ago. Meanwhile, Gordon tallied 12.0 ppg and garnered VaSID State Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman.
The Flames will tip off the 2010-11 campaign inside the Vines Center on Nov. 12, when Commonwealth foe Virginia Intermont visits. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, Green's Lady Flames were selected as the favorite to win their 14th Big South title in the last 15 seasons. A year ago, Liberty went 27-6 and captured the conference championship with only one senior on the roster.
Redshirt sophomore guard/forward Devon Brown, who hit the game-winning shot with 4.2 seconds remaining in the Big South Championship title contest, was tabbed the Big South Preseason Player of the Year. Redshirt junior forward Avery Warley joined her on the preseason all-conference roster, after grabbing 8.5 rebounds per contest in 2009-10.
Liberty's first contest of 2010-11 will be a matchup with Creighton at N.C. State's Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. The Lady Flames will return to Lynchburg for their home opener versus Virginia Union, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
Those not able to participate in the call-in portion of the show can also email their questions for Layer and Green to FlamesHotline@liberty.edu, prior to the start of the show, or send direct messages to York's Twitter page (www.twitter.com/luradiopxp).
Flame fans can listen to the show locally by tuning their radio dials to 88.3 FM Victory FM or one of the local affiliates for the Victory FM Radio Network. The show will also air live online at LibertyFlames.com and can be heard by clicking on the link above.
