Senior forward Maria Owen recorded two shots in Liberty's game against VCU on Friday.
Coming off a close contest with a James Madison one week ago, the Liberty women's soccer team stepped into VCU's Sports Bracket for its second straight Commonwealth clash. Unfortunately, the hosting Rams did not allow Liberty's offense to generate momentum and fired off a trio of goals in the first period to take the contest, 3-0, Friday night. With the defeat, Liberty falls to 3-8-1 in the all-time series with the Rams. Liberty now stands at 1-3-2 on the season, while VCU improves to 3-2-1.
The host squad lit up the board in the opening minute. Midfielder Bre White fed a pass to forward Bex Kunz, who proceeded to carry the ball down the right sideline and place a shot in the left corner for an early 1-0 VCU edge. The tandem resurfaced in the 20th minute, when Kunz crossed it to White, who found the net from eight yards out to give VCU a 2-0 lead. Kunz completed the scoring for the Rams just five minutes later, lofting a 12-yard shot from the left sideline for her second goal of the contest. Due to a scoreless second period, Kunz's final marker ultimately gave way to a 3-0 final. VCU outshot the Lady Flames, 20-4, in the contest. The Rams' Megan Lynch occupied the net for the home team the entire 90 minutes, making three saves. Liberty's Ashley Nyholt remained in goal just over 75 minutes of the contest, finishing with four saves. Freshman goalkeeper Alexa Hormann took over in net for Nyholt in the remaining 14:51 of the matchup. The Lady Flames will remain on the road this weekend, travelling to Elon, N.C., to take on the Elon Phoenix in a Sunday afternoon tilt. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
