Flames Picked Fourth in Preseason Men's Soccer Poll; Telesford Second in Player of the Year Voting

Winthrop University's men's soccer team has been chosen first in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll, as voted by the league's Head Men's Soccer Coaches and Sports Information Directors, while the panel voted Eagle junior forward Saidi Isaac the league's Preseason Player of the Year, it was announced today by the conference office.
Liberty was picked fourth with 87 total points.  The Flames, coached by Jeff Alder, return all but three players from the 2005 squad that was 6-8-2 and tied for fourth in the Big South standings.  Highlighting the Liberty returnees is senior defender Osei Telesford (Sr., San Juan, Trinidad), who finished second in the Preseason Player of the Year voting.  Telesford is a three-time all-conference honoree, and was named the Premier Development League Defender of the Year last week.
Winthrop received nine first-place votes and 116 out of a possible 128 points in the voting, finishing ahead of Coastal Carolina, which totaled four first-place votes and 108 points from the panel.  Birmingham-Southern, which received two first-place votes, landed in the third spot with 89 points.  Radford finished fifth in the voting with 70 points, followed by High Point (38 points and one first-place vote), UNC Asheville (36) and VMI (32). 
Isaac finished the 2005 season as the Big South's scoring leader and ranked fourth nationally with 1.95 points per game, totaling 39 points.  The 2005 first-team All-Big South performer received nine first-place votes and 19 points. Birmingham-Southern's Gino Cozzolino was third in the voting (two first-place votes and seven points), while VMI's Charles Nweke (six points) and Coastal Carolina's Patrick Robinson (three points) round out the top five.
The 2006 Big South men's soccer season begins Aug. 25 with six games scheduled.  The Flames kick off their season at Longwood on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.  The men's soccer Conference Championship is slated for Nov. 2-5 on the campus of Radford University.
