TheLiberty Flames men's soccer squad has been chosen to finish fourth in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll, as voted on by the league's head men's soccer coaches. The Flames, who garnered one first-place vote, received 50 points in being predicted to end the upcoming soccer season fourth in the conference standings.
The panel selected High Point to win the conference title, the first time in league history the Panthers have been picked first in the Big South's annual preseason poll. High Point junior forward Karo Okiomah was tabbed the league's Preseason Player of the Year by the panel.
Liberty finished its 2009 season with a 12-5-3 record and a 4-2-2 conference mark. Head coach Jeff Alder's team returns 17 players from last season's squad, which tied a school record with 12 shutouts in a season. The Flames ranked fifth nationally in scoring offense last season, averaging 2.15 goals per game and seventh in the country in team goals-against average with a 0.53.
High Point collected four first-place votes and 73 points in being voted first. Coastal Carolina and Winthrop tied for second in the voting, each picking up two first-place votes and 68 points. Radford followed the Flames in the fifth spot, receiving 42 points. Gardner-Webb (32 points), UNC Asheville (30), Presbyterian (23 points) and VMI (19 points) rounded out the poll.
The Flames open their 2010 season Sept. 1 at Osborne Stadium by hosting the Bluefield Rams. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Big South Men's Soccer Championship is slated for Nov. 11-14 on the campus of High Point.
