Liberty Director of Athletics Jeff Barber (center) was the guest putter on hole No. 3 during the afternoon flight of the 20th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament.
The 20th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament was successfully contested at London Downs Golf Club in Forest, Va., on June 11. A record group of 188 golfers battled for prizes in morning and afternoon flights. There were 29 teams that played in the afternoon and 18 in the morning. The winning team featured four gentlemen who placed second in the tournament last year. That team, sponsored by Universal T's, consisted of Brian Betham, Ed Barnhouse, Jeremiah Colling and Liberty men's soccer coach, Jeff Alder. The second - place team, consisting of Barry Moore, Bill Robertson Jr., Fred Snow and Buddy Nelson, came in close behind at 18-under. Four other teams also finished tied for that same score. Skill prizes were awarded for longest putt, four longest drives and four closest to the pins on each par three. Also, the Mabry Automotive Group would have given the winner on number three a choice of a $25,000 car from any of its dealers, if they successfully scored a hole-in-one. There was a hole-in-one that was hit, but it was on hole No. 11. Four flights were awarded prizes on the day with a total of 11 team winners crowned. In addition, more than 65 golfers who purchased the mulligan package received door prizes supplied by Lynchburg area businesses, for such things as dinners at quality dining establishments, golf equipment, hotel packages and Liberty apparel. Every participant received a substantial gift bag which included a Liberty golf shirt, tournament golf balls, gift, certificates and coupons supplied by sponsors. Sponsorship support for this event continues to grow each year. Major sponsors included Chick-fil-A Wards Road (title), Panera Bread (presenting/practice tee), Woodmen of the World (ball), LU Bookstore (shirt), Branch & Associates (cart sponsors) LU Dining/Sodexo (drinks) and the Mabry Automotive Group (hole-in-one on #3). Proceeds from the Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament are used to finance special projects within the athletics department. Proceeds from the 2006 and 2007 tournaments were used to install two points-fouls boards at the Vines Center. Proceeds from the 2008 tournament went toward the conversion of the scoreboard system in the arena to fully wireless and the 2009 funds helped purchase the 38-foot floor video board at the Vines Center. The date for the 21stAnnual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament has been tentatively set for June 10, 2011.
