Four Liberty athletes were named to the 2010 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Softball Team, as voted on by the state's sports information directors. J'nae Jefferson, Tiffani Smith and Kaylee West were named to the first team, while Cassie Hendrix was a second-team honoree.
Jefferson, a senior from Barboursville, W.Va., enjoyed a stellar season as the Lady Flames' primary third baseman. She was named to the Big South all-conference first team, the Big South All-Academic team and the 2010 Big South Championship all-tournament team. She started all 57 games for Liberty this year, leading the team with 62 hits and 18 multiple-hit games. Jefferson also tied for first on the squad for the longest hitting streak of the season at 12 games. Smith, a junior from Hanover, Pa., became the first player in Liberty history to be named the Big South Pitcher of the Year. The right-hander, who was also named to the Big South all-conference first team for the second straight year, led all Big South pitchers with 211 strikeouts and a .199 opposing batting average. The member of the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region squad also tied for second in Liberty history with 20 wins in the circle this season. West, a sophomore from Auburndale, Fla., started all 57 games at first base this year. She led the team with 12 doubles and ranked second with 35 RBIs on the year. She tied a program-best game performance on March 20 against N.C. A&T, going 4-for-5 at the plate. West was named to the 2010 USC Upstate Campus Suites Spartan Classic all-tournament team, held in Spartanburg, S.C., Feb 19-21. Hendrix, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind., had her best year to date for the Lady Flames, leading the squad with a .375 overall batting average. She was named to the Big South all-conference second team, was a member of the Big South Softball Championship all-tournament team and led all Big South players with a .469 batting average against conference opponents. Hendrix recorded four homers this year, marking the first home runs of her career. The last time Liberty had four players receive VaSID all-state honors was in 2000, when Amy Csider, Meredith Hollyfield, Leslie Inge and Cheryl Wyrick were all named to the first team. 2010 VaSID University Division All-State Softball Team
