Teufel Earns First Team All-Big South Honors

All-Big South first team pitcher Shawn Teufel

Liberty pitcher Shawn Teufel was named to the Big South all-conference first team, while four other Flames, Nathan Thompson, Tyler Bream, Matt Williams and Curran Redal, received second team honors.

The league announced and presented the awards before Game 4 of the 2010 Big South Baseball Championship, between the No. 2 seed Liberty Flames and No.5 seed Winthrop Eagles. Thompson was also selected to the conference's all-academic team.

Teufel (Sr., Tequesta, Fla.) was voted to the Big South all-conference first team by the conference's coaches for the second-straight year. The senior left-hander enters the week tied for second in the conference in victories with a 10-3 record and is also second in the Big South with a 2.53 ERA. Named to the team as a starting pitcher, he leads the conference with 96 innings pitched. His 87 strikeouts also rank third in the Big South. Opponents are hitting just .228 against him.

Thompson (Sr., Stoneville, N.C.) was selected to the all-conference second team as a catcher. The senior is hitting .311 with 51 RBIs and a team-leading nine home runs. He also plated 48 runs in 55 games. His .539 slugging percentage is second on the Flames roster, entering this afternoon's contest. Thompson also was named to the Big South all-academic team.

Bream (So., Zelienople, Pa.) was named to his first all-conference team, receiving the coaches' nod as the second team third baseman. The sophomore leads the Big South in hits with 89, the fifth most in a season by a Flame in the history of the program. Bream also ranks third in the conference with 21 doubles and second with 136 total bases. The third baseman is hitting .360 with a team-leading 53 RBIs, eight home runs and 52 runs scored.

Williams (So., Franklin, Tenn.) also was selected to his first all-conference team, being tabbed the second team shortstop. The sophomore begins the week ranked 10th in the Big South with a .369 batting average, 28 RBIs and 50 runs scored. He is tied for third in the conference with 21 doubles. Williams leads the Flames with 28 multiple-hit games this season. In 210 chances in the field, the shortstop has made only 13 errors.

Redal (Sr., Moses Lake, Wash.) was named to the all-conference team for the second consecutive season. This season, the senior outfielder was selected to the second team after being named first team all-conference in 2009. Redal enters the 2010 Big South Baseball Championship with the third-most hits in the Big South with 85. The senior is hitting .360 with 40 RBIs and 52 runs scored. He leads the Flames in steals with 13.

No. 2 seed Liberty will meet No. 5 seed and host Winthrop this afternoon in Game 4 of the 2010 Big South Championship at the Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
