Head coach Brant Tolsma has guided the Flames to a pair of IC4A titles and two runner-up finishes in the last four years.
After guiding the Liberty men's track & field team to its fourth consecutive top two finish at the IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships, head coach Brant Tolsma recapped the meet with Nick Pierce.
The Flames held the lead for much of last weekend's meet at Princeton, N.J., before finishing nine points behind Connecticut, in second place. Sam Chelanga repeated as IC4A 5K champion, while Evans Kigen captured the steeplechase title. Another highlight was Elliot Galeone's 224-3 javelin throw, which set a new school record.
Melinda Bendik threw the hammer 183-6 and Ashley Osborne clocked a 16:31.00 in the 5K to establish new school records on the women's side. Their efforts helped the Lady Flames finish in a tie for 15th place, their highest finish at the ECAC meet since 2007.
Liberty's next stop will be Greensboro, N.C., for the NCAA Division I Preliminary Round meet, slated for May 27-29. It appears that 14 or 15 Flames and Lady Flames will qualify for the meet, which will determine the participants in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The official list of NCAA Division I Preliminary Round competitors will be released on Friday.
