The Lady Flames are scheduled to depart for Israel on May 29.
With the 2010 spring semester having concluded, most students have departed Liberty University's campus for the summer. However, the Liberty women's basketball team remains in town, making final preparations for a team trip to Israel, which is slated for May 29 through June 11. The Lady Flames' players and coaching staff will take part in the tour, which has both educational and competitive value, according to head coach Carey Green. "This is an exciting time for our program, to deepen our spiritual walk and further build our team chemistry," stated Green. "This tour is definitely not entirely about basketball. For example, several of our players have inquired about the unique opportunity of being baptized in the Jordan River." The first part of the trip will feature a tour through some of the Bible's most prominent locations, including Jerusalem, the Jordan River, Capernaum and Gethsemane. The Lady Flames will then head to Eilat on June 4 to compete in the fifth annual Friendship Games, against colleges from many different nations. This week, the three-time defending Big South champion Lady Flames are beginning an NCAA-allotted series of 10 team practices, leading up to the trip. It will be Liberty's first venture outside the U.S. border since competing in the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico during December 2006. "I truly believe that our relationships will deepen and our faith will come to life, as we walk where Jesus walked," added Green.
