The Liberty men's indoor track & field team has earned the Big South Team Sportsmanship Award for the 2009-10 season, it was announced today. The award was voted on by Big South student-athletes. The Flames, coached by Brant Tolsma, earned the honor for the first time since 2007, when they shared the award with Charleston Southern. Liberty has now won three Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards this season, after picking up honors in volleyball and men's cross country during the fall. The Flames have garnered a conference-leading 24 total Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards since the program was instituted in 2005-06. Competitively, Liberty won its 13th consecutive conference title, at the 2010 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, held Feb. 27-28 in Clemson, S.C. The Flames have now won the Big South men's indoor track & field team championship every year it has been contested. At the conclusion of the 2009-10 athletic season, the Big South Conference's Institutional Sportsmanship Award will be announced. An institution's sport winners count towards the Institution Sportsmanship Award and the winner is determined on a system recognizing the highest percentage of the maximum possible points each institution is capable of achieving in that year. The institution with the highest percentage will win the award. VMI has won the Big South's Institutional Sportsmanship Award all four years of the award's history.
