The Lady Flames will celebrate

The Lady Flames will celebrate "Throwback Day" during tomorrow's doubleheader against Longwood, sporting uniforms from the 2002 season.

After sweeping Norfolk State and Hampton on the road earlier this week, the Lady Flames are back at home tomorrow, hosting Longwood in another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Lady Flames will be celebrating "Throwback Day" tomorrow, sporting Liberty softball uniforms from the 2002 season.

Liberty (32-11) is enjoying a 12-game winning streak, the longest in Lady Flames softball history, after sweeping Hampton, Norfolk State, George Washington, Big South opponent Gardner-Webb, and James Madison. Prior to that, the Lady Flames took two of three games from Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C., April 9-10.

With 32 wins this season, Liberty is ranked 38th in the nation in won-loss percentage.

The Liberty offense has exploded in the last 10 games, with eight batters hitting over .300 during the span. As a team, the Lady Flames have scored a total of 252 runs on the year so far, compared to 172 total runs during the 2009 campaign.

Cassie Hendrix leads Liberty with a .371 batting average, while Kelly Strickland is batting .333 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs. Strickland also leads all Big South Conference players in the last two categories.

In the circle, Tiffani Smith is in the zone for Liberty, boasting an 18-3 record and posting a 1.00 ERA over the last 10 games. She leads all Big South pitchers in wins, strikeouts (172) and opposing batting average (.180). Smith has been named the Big South Pitcher of the Week on three occasions this year.

The Lancers (32-14) are coming off of a split with Virginia Tech on April 21 at home. Longwood won the first game, 10-7, before falling in the second contest, 4-3.

Longwood is paced by Brooke Short, who is batting .433 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs, followed by Kami Nuckols with 68 hits and 37 runs scored. As a team, the Lancers are batting .329 this season.

Briana Wells leads the pitching staff with a 28-8 record, and posts a 2.56 ERA with 122 strikeouts in 213 and 2/3 innings of work.

The Lady Flames have faced off against the Lancers 29 times, and are 10-19 all-time against Longwood.

Last season, the two teams split a doubleheader in Farmville, Va., with Liberty winning the first game, 5-1, and the Lancers claiming Game 2, 2-1. Prior to 2009, Longwood swept the doubleheader with Liberty for four consecutive years.

Liberty has only swept Longwood one time, picking up 2-1 and 4-3 wins at home on March 4, 1999.
