Devon Brown is Liberty's second consecutive VaSID State Rookie of the Year honoree.

Liberty redshirt freshman guard Devon Brown has become the second straight Lady Flame to be voted State Rookie of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), it was announced today.

Brown's award follows teammate Avery Warley's VaSID State Rookie of the Year nod a season ago. Both Brown and Warley were also included on the 2009-10 VaSID Women's Basketball University Division All-State teams, making Liberty one of only two Commonwealth programs (also VCU) with multiple honorees. Brown earned a spot on the first team, while Warley made the second team.

In addition to Brown, the other major VaSID award winners included State Coach of the Year Kenny Brooks of James Madison and State Player of the Year Monica Wright of Virginia.

Brown adds to an already impressive collection of hardware, after her stellar rookie season with the Lady Flames. The Waynesboro, Va., native, one of only four freshmen in the nation to average at least 17.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg this season, was also included on the Richmond Times-Dispatch All-State team.

At the conference level, Brown was named Big South Championship MVP, after making the game-winning shot with 4.2 seconds remaining in the championship game versus Gardner-Webb. She was also a first-team All-Big South performer and a two-time Big South Player of the Week.

With a 17.2 ppg average, Brown was the first freshman to lead the Big South Conference in scoring since Liberty's Elena Kisseleva in 1996-97. She also ranked among the Big South's top five in rebounding (third-8.2 rpg), field goal percentage (third-.494), free throw percentage (fifth-.738) and steals (fifth-2.0 spg). Brown also broke the Liberty freshman rebounding record, with 271 caroms.

Warley, a redshirt sophomore forward from Washington, D.C., was an honorable mention selection on the Richmond Times-Dispatch All-State team. She joined Brown as a first-team All-Big South honoree and made the Marriott Cavalier Classic All-Tournament team.

Statistically, Warley paced the Big South in field goal percentage for the second-straight season, at .603. Her team-high 8.5 rebounds per contest ranked second in the Big South and second among all Virginia players. Warley's work on the boards also helped Liberty lead the nation in rebound margin for the third time in program history, at +13.9.

Led by Brown and Warley, the Lady Flames finished the 2009-10 campaign at 27-6, despite fielding a roster with only one senior. Liberty won its 13th Big South Conference title in the last 14 seasons and made its 13th NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship appearance.
