Better Afternoon Lifts Flames to Eighth Place

The Flames posted the best improvement from round one to round two, helping Liberty climb four spots up the leaderboard into eighth place following Friday afternoon's action at the ECU/UNCW River Landing Intercollegiate.

Following the morning flight, Liberty found itself in 12th place in the 13-team field after carding a 12-over par 300 to open the 54-hole event, which is being hosted at the par-72, 6,900-yard River Landing Golf Course.

Co-host UNC Wilmington led five programs who found red numbers during the first round, as the No. 59 GolfWeek ranked Seahawks fired a five-under par 283.

The next four teams in the standings each finished one shot further behind UNC Wilmington, starting with Wofford's four-under par 284 and No. 70 East Carolina's three-under par 285.

Rounding outing the top five programs after the first round were No. 66 North Carolina, who carded a two-under par 286, and No. 63 VCU, who shot a one-under par 287.

Liberty, ranked No. 82 in the latest GolfWeek team listing, shaved 15 strokes off its first round total and carded the fourth-best second round with a three-under par 288.

Liberty's fifth-best round of the 2009-10 season helped the Flames climb four spots up the leaderboard, as Liberty will enter the final 18 holes of competition in eighth place, as the team has posted a 36-hole, nine-over par 585 total (300-285).

North Carolina and UNC Wilmington were two of the three teams to post better scores than the Flames during the afternoon flight, enabling the two squads to share the overnight lead.

The Tar Heels fired a 10-under par 279 to finish the day with an aggregate 11-under par 565 (286-279). UNC Wilmington posted its second sub-par team total and shares the 11-under par 565 lead (283-282) with North Carolina.

Wofford stands in third place at five-under par 571 (284-287), while East Carolina, who is sharing hosting duties with UNC Wilmington, is the last under-par team with a three-under par 573 (285-288).

Fifteen total players will enter the final 18 holes of play in red numbers, led by UNC Wilmington's Josh Brock, who stands with a 36-hole, six-under par 138 total after a pair of rounds at 69.

North Carolina's Henry Zaytoun (71-68) and Wofford's Ben Wright (70-69) share second place as both golfers stand with a five-under par 139.

Rounding out the top five golfers in the field of 79 are East Carolina's David Watkins (71-69) and UNC Wilmington's Ryan Sullivan (73-67), who finished the day both at four-under par 140.

Liberty's Robert Karlsson and Jordan Frye are pacing the way for the Flames, as the pair of golfers share 21st place with a one-over par 145.

Karlsson was Liberty's first-round leader after firing a one-over par 73 followed by an ever par 72. Frye opened with a three-over par 75, but rebounded with a two-under par 70 during the afternoon flight.

Max McKay, who is the Big South's top ranked individual golfer according to GolfStat at No. 60, is one shot behind Karlsson and Frye and shares 26th place with a two-over par 146. The freshman opened the event with a four-over par 76, but tied Frye's two-under par 70 during his second time around the River Landing Golf Course.

Rounding out Liberty's top five golfers are Preston Dembowiak and Stephen Dooley. Dembowiak is tied for 43rd with a five-over par 149 (76-73) and Dooley shared 54th place with a seven-over par 151 (76-75).

Liberty's Chris Watters and Andrew Nelson are competing in the event as individuals. Following Friday's action, Watters is tied for 49th place with a six-over par 150 (76-74) and Nelson is tied for 66th place with a 10-over par 154 (78-74).

The 13-team field will return to the par-72 links course tomorrow morning to wrap up the River Landing Intercollegiate with 18 final holes of competition.

Liberty will look to match its second-round total and continue to move up the leaderboard in the squad's final tune-up event before the Big South Men's Golf Championship April 19-21.
