Tyler Bream had three hits, including his third home run of the season, Wednesday.

Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream had three hits, including a home run, and Cameron Giannini pitched seven strong innings, as the Liberty Flames defeated the VCU Rams, 7-4, Wednesday evening at the Diamond.

With its third straight win, Liberty moves to 16-8 on the year. VCU falls to 13-12.

The visiting Flames jumped on the scoreboard in the opening inning. Center fielder Curran Redal led off the contest with an infield single. Two batters later, Bream ripped a liner into the right-field gap, rolling all the way to the wall for a triple and a quick 1-0, Liberty advantage. Designated hitter Nathan Thompson followed with a RBI grounder, plating Bream for a 2-0 lead.

Liberty added to its advantage in the second inning, striking for a run with two outs. With two Flames already retired in the frame, catcher Jerry Neufang walked and moved to second on Redal's second infield single in as many innings. Left fielder Austin Taylor then chased home Neufang with Liberty's third run of the game, lining a double into the right-center field gap.

In their next at bat, the Flames made it three straight scoring innings, once again plating a run with two outs. Right fielder Michael Robertson lined a triple into the right-center field gap and second baseman P.J. Jimenez followed with a bunt base hit for a 4-0 advantage.

VCU pushed across its first run of the contest in the bottom of the frame. Left fielder Matt Leskiw drew a two-out walk and stole second base. The next batter, center fielder M.L. Morgan, dropped a single into center field to score Leskiw, and make it, 4-1, Flames.

In the fourth, the Rams cut into the Liberty lead with another run. Shortstop Doug Otto walked to open the frame and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Michael Cheatham two batters later. The next batter, right fielder John Lenherr, grounded out to second, plating Otto and trimming the Flames' advantage to 4-2.

The teams exchanged single runs in the fifth. Liberty scored on a leadoff double by shortstop Williams and a sacrifice fly by Jimenez in the top of the inning. In the home half of the frame, Leskiw singled with one out and advanced to third on a stolen base and a passed ball. A grounder by Morgan brought home the runner.

Leading 5-3, the Flames added two more runs with one swing of the bat in the sixth inning. With one out and Taylor, who singled, on second base, Bream belted his third home run of the season. The sophomore's fast-rising liner sailed over the left field wall, giving Liberty a 7-3 edge.

The Rams added a run in the eighth. Cheatham provided the run with a sacrifice fly for the final score of 7-4.

Giannini records his first win in a Liberty uniform, evening his record at 1-1 on the year. The freshman right-hander allowed four runs on four hits over seven innings. He struck out four batters and walked three. Josh Richardson finished up for the Flames, pitching two scoreless frames.

Left-hander Michael Graham takes the loss for VCU to fall to 3-3 on the season. The first of four Rams to take the mound in the contest gave up five runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out one and walked two batters.

Besides Bream, who also drove in three runs, Redal had three hits of his own in the contest for the Flames.

Liberty returns home, Friday, for the start of a three-game Big South series against the High Point Panthers. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Worthington Stadium.
