Liberty Head Baseball Coach Jim Toman has announced that catcher Nathan Thompson and pitchers Shawn Teufel and Dustin Umberger have been chosen as captains for the 2010 Liberty Baseball team. The three seniors were selected by virtue of a team vote, with the senior trio received overwhelming support from their teammates.

Thompson has been a member of the Liberty program the past three seasons, posting a .270 batting average. The catcher has earned Big South Presidential Honor Roll mention twice during his academic career.

Teufel was named to the 2009 All-Big South first team last spring. The left-hander led the Flames in wins with a 9-2 record and 72 strikeouts last season. Teufel has also excelled in the classroom, earning Big South Presidential Honor Roll status each of his four academic years at Liberty.

Umberger returns to active duty in 2010, after sitting out most of last season with an injury. The right-hander will be serving as a team captain for the second consecutive year. In 2007, Umberger led the Big South in strikeouts with 88, while posting an 8-3 mark for the Flames. A fixture of the Liberty staff over his four years with the Flames, Umberger enters the year sixth on the program's career strikeout list with 194.

"I thought our team chose three outstanding individuals to lead them this spring," said Toman. "Nathan, Shawn and Dustin are proven veterans in the Big South Conference and are well-respected by all of their teammates."

Liberty opens its 2010 campaign on Feb. 19 in Kennesaw, Ga., against the Kennesaw State Owls. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Flames will begin practice in preparation for the 2010 campaign, Monday at Worthington Stadium. Liberty will open its home schedule on March 2 against instate rival VCU. Game time is slated for 3 p.m. The contest will start a stretch of eight consecutive home games, the longest homestand of the year for the Flames.
