Clarence Powell qualified for the IC4A Championship in both the triple jump and high jump with his performances at the Liberty Kickoff.

Liberty junior Clarence Powell has been named the year's first Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced today.

Powell (Marianna, Fla.) made a successful season debut at the Dec. 2-3 Liberty Kickoff, winning the high jump (7-0.25) and triple jump (48-10.75), while placing fifth in the long jump (22-5.75). As a result, he claimed his second career Big South Track Athlete of the Week award, but his first recognition since Jan. 30, 2008.

Powell's career-best high jump clearance was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, and Powell currently ranks No. 2 nationally in the event. The seventh high jumper in program history to leap 7-0 or higher, Powell also claimed an IC4A qualifier in the triple jump at his season-opening meet.

Liberty will now take an extended break from competition, before returning to action Jan. 22-23. That weekend, the Flames and Lady Flames will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Invitational.
