Six athletes recently signed national letters of intent to play softball for Liberty during the 2010-11 academic year.

Liberty University Head Softball Coach Paul Wetmore has announced the signing of six players to national letters of intent for the 2010-11 academic year. The early signees include Alyssa DiMartino, Sydnei Lester, Christina Morice, Grace Nordan, Samantha Shivock and Katie Zavodny.

Alyssa DiMartino (5-8, P/OF, Brockport, N.Y.)
Alyssa DiMartino will come to Liberty from Northstar Christian Academy in Brockport, N.Y., where she holds the record for most strikeouts in a game with 22. She also holds the state record with 11 triples in a single season.

DiMartino recorded a .532 batting average her junior season. For her career inside the circle, she has thrown eight no-hitters and one perfect game.

The four-year scholar-athlete has led her team to three consecutive sectional titles, and was named the 2009 sectional tournament MVP, as well as the League MVP. She was also named the Birds-Eye Player of the Year in 2009.

"We think Alyssa flew under everyone's radar, and she is a great find for Liberty," commented Wetmore. "On the mound, she will give the depth and versatility we have been searching for, and she is so athletic, we believe she will challenge for an outfield playing position. She will also carry a large bat to the plate for us."

Sydnei Lester (5-8, C, Tazewell, Va.)
Sydnei Lester will join the Lady Flames after a successful career at Tazewell High School in Tazewell, Va. The catcher has a .382 career batting average and a .571 career on-base percentage.

She was named to the all-district and all-region teams twice, and received an all-state honorable mention.

Lester also played for the West Virginia Dusters travel team.

"Sydnei is a prototype, hard-nosed catcher," Wetmore said. "She has a great arm and hits the ball a ton. We are expecting big things out of her."

Christina Morice (5-1, OF, Chesapeake, Va.)
Christina Morice will come to Liberty from Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Va., where she was a second-team all-district selection in 2008 and 2009.

The outfielder, who also competes for the Virginia Legends travel team, has a career batting average of .428, to go along with a .643 career on-base percentage.

"Christina has all the tools to be an impact player," Wetmore said. "Her speed will cause havoc on the bases and at the plate, and her outfield skills will match anyone around."

Grace Nordan (5-4, SS/UTL, Bristow, Va.)

Grace Nordan attends Brentsville District High School, where she was named the 2008 NW District Player of the Year and a 2009 NW District first-team pitcher. As a junior, she was also named to the all-area county first team and the all-region second team.

Nordan has a .356 career batting average, and also plays for the Glory Diamond Elite travel team.

"Grace is a true utility player," commented Wetmore. "She can and will play anywhere to help the team. She will give us the depth we are looking for, and she has amazing pop in her bat."

Samantha "Sammi" Shivock (5-5, SS/2B, New Castle, Del.)
Sammi Shivock will join the Liberty softball team from Red Lion Christian Academy, where she has been named second-team all-state three times, as well as being an all-conference first-team selection. She has also won the Christian Character Award twice.

The infielder has recorded a .410 career batting average, to go along with a .457 on-base percentage and a .676 slugging percentage.

As a member of the Delaware Cobras summer travel team, Shivock played in 85 games, finishing with 40 RBIs, 11 doubles, nine triples, six home runs and 40 runs scored.

"We are excited to have Sammi join our program," stated Wetmore. "We expect her to be a fixture in our infield and a great threat at the plate."

Katie Zavodny (5-8, OF, Concord, N.C.)
Katie Zavodny will come to Liberty from Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, N.C.

The outfielder is a two-time all-conference honoree, and was named all-district, all-region and all-state as a junior.

Zavodny has a .445 career batting average and a .558 on-base percentage, and also competes for the Magic 16U travel team.

"Katie has great foot speed and she will put that to work in the outfield on defense and at the plate," Wetmore said. "We expect her to have a bright future ahead of her at Liberty."
