Kelly Haseman (L) was tabbed Liberty's first-ever Big South Defensive Player of the Week, while Chelaine McCarty garnered her second Big South Player of the Week honor this season.

After helping the Liberty volleyball team win three conference road matches last week, senior Chelaine McCarty and sophomore Kelly Haseman were recognized by the Big South Conference. McCarty is this week's Big South Player of the Week, while Haseman is the Lady Flames' first-ever Defensive Player of the Week honoree.

The play of McCarty (MB, Houston, Ala.) and Haseman (L/DS, Three Rivers, Mich.) helped the Lady Flames win matches at Radford (3-1), Coastal Carolina (3-0) and Winthrop (3-0). Liberty, now 14-9 overall and 9-2 in conference play, has claimed sole possession of second place in the conference standings.

McCarty's Big South Player of the Week was her second of the season and the fourth of her career. She joins UNC Asheville senior Lauren Ficker as the only players to earn multiple Big South Player of the Week nods in 2009.

McCarty was a consistent attacker for head coach Shane Pinder's squad last week, hitting .375 or higher in all three matches. For the week, she hit .382 with 32 kills, four aces and a team-high 10 blocks. McCarty led all players in both aces (3) and blocks (5) at Coastal Carolina on Friday and spiked home a team-leading 12 kills at Winthrop the following afternoon.

Haseman totaled 51 digs last week, and helped the Lady Flames limit their opponents to a .180 attack percentage. The sophomore opened her week with her seventh 20-dig performance of the season, notching 22 digs at Radford last Tuesday. Haseman then came up with a match-high 17 digs at Coastal Carolina Friday evening and was part of a defensive effort which kept Winthrop from recording a single ace Saturday.

Liberty will wrap up its current four-match road swing Tuesday at 7 p.m., when the Lady Flames visit VCU in its final non-conference contest prior to next month's Big South Volleyball Championship.
