Chelaine McCarty led all players in aces (3) and blocks (5) during Liberty's 3-0 sweep at Coastal Carolina.

Playing one of its most complete matches of the season, the Liberty volleyball team hit .310 in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-18) sweep at Coastal Carolina, Friday evening.

With their second straight win to open a four-match road swing, Liberty boosts its overall record to 13-9. The Lady Flames also remain in a second-place tie with Saturday's opponent, Winthrop, with an 8-2 Big South record.

Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina saw its five-match winning streak halted and lost for just the second time at Kimbel Arena this season. The Chanticleers are now 13-10 overall and 6-3 in the Big South Conference.

The opening set included 10 ties and four lead changes. Homestanding Coastal Carolina led as late as 13-12, after a Megan Bickford kill. Freshman Loren Thomas (MB, Ocoee, Fla.) then contributed two kills and a block during Liberty's ensuing 7-1 burst, which put the Lady Flames on top for good. Karyl Bacon's (Jr., OH/DS, Temecula, Calif.) service ace finished off an impressive 25-17 win by Liberty.

Led by Bacon's four kills and six digs, Liberty recorded its highest attack percentage of the evening during the opening stanza, .389. The Chanticleers' Chelsy Kimes put down a set-leading six kills, but hit just .188 for the home squad.

The back-and-forth second set was the most competitive of the contest, featuring 11 ties and seven lead changes. Freshman Sierra Livesay recorded a kill, lifting Coastal Carolina to a 17-13 lead. Nicki Scripko (Jr., OH, Fayetteville, N.C.) answered with a kill on the next rally, before stepping to the service line to reel off six straight points. By the time the Chanticleers recorded their next side out, they found themselves trailing, 20-17.

Coastal Carolina answered with a 5-1 surge, reclaiming a 22-21 advantage on Kimes' sixth kill of the session. Liberty then posted the set's final run, wrapping up a 25-22 decision with four consecutive points. Chelaine McCarty (Sr., MB, Houston, Ala.) and Courtney Boggs (So., S, Marysville, Ohio) teamed up for the last two markers, on a combined block and a McCarty kill.

Bacon again paced the Liberty attack in set two, hitting .250 with five kills. McCarty contributed four kills and hit a set-high .500. For the Chanticleers, Kimes' half dozen kills led all players.

With its backs against the wall, the Chanticleers hit .324 as a team during the third and final stanza. However, they were never able to catch Liberty, after the Lady Flames jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Scripko enjoyed her best offensive set of the night, hitting .625 with five kills, including the one which sealed Liberty's 25-18 triumph. With the 3-0 sweep, the Lady Flames took both regular-season contests from the Chanticleers and beat Coastal Carolina for the eighth straight time.

The Lady Flames hit .342 during the third set, with three aces and a trio of blocks. McCarty made a variety of contributions, including three kills, two aces and three blocks. Kimes recorded five more kills, but it was not enough for the Chanticleers to extend the match.

Liberty, which closed the evening with a .310 team attack percentage, is now 48-0 when hitting .300 or higher, since rally scoring was instituted in 2001. The Lady Flames only committed eight total attack errors in the match. Liberty Lady Flames also served for six aces to the Chanticleers' two and had two more rejections (7-5) than the conference-leading team in blocks.

Bacon paced Liberty's balanced attack with a dozen kills and completed her third double-double in her last five contests with a matching number of digs. The junior will enter Saturday's match at Winthrop with 985 career digs.

Position mate Scripko ended the evening with 11 kills and eight digs, accounting for double-digit kills for the 17th consecutive match.

Big South attack percentage McCarty enjoyed another efficient and productive match on Friday. She hit .391 with nine kills, while pacing all players in both aces (3) and blocks (5).

A trio of underclassmen also stood out for the Lady Flames during the sweep, led by libero Kelly Haseman (So., Three Rivers, Mich.), who finished with a match-high 17 digs. Fellow sophomore Boggs notched a match-leading 37 assists, to go along with three kills, three blocks and seven digs. Freshman Thomas hit .467 with seven kills for the Lady Flames.

Coastal Carolina's Kimes totaled 17 kills on the nights, pacing all players. Teammate Amanda Russell fashioned a double-double, with 10 kills and a team-best 16 digs. Setter Meagan Tracey summed 36 assists.
