Assistant coach Alexis Sherard instructs (L-R) Jelena Antic, Carra Coy, Rachel McLeod, Avery Warley and LaKendra Washington as the Lady Flames officially open practice for the 2009-10 campaign.

As the clock struck 5 p.m. this afternoon, head coach Carey Green and the Liberty women's basketball team took the floor at the Schilling Center, officially beginning practice for the 2009-10 season.

The new-look Lady Flames, featuring nine underclassmen on their 13-person roster, will have four weeks to prepare for their season opener. Liberty will tip off the 2009-10 campaign Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., when Winston-Salem State visits the Vines Center for the first time.

The Lady Flames, selected as a co-favorite with High Point to capture its 13th Big South Conference title in the last 14 seasons, return two starters from last year's team. Amber Mays, Liberty's lone senior, made 31 starts at point guard a year ago, pacing the Lady Flames in assists (126) and steals (68). Redshirt sophomore post Avery Warley was tabbed the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Rookie of the Year, after ranking among the Big South's top five in field goal percentage (1st-.626), blocked shots (3rd-1.4 bpg) and rebounds (4th-7.8 rpg).

Liberty also welcomes six newcomers to this year's team, including junior point guard Dymond Morgan, sophomore post player Tolu Omotola (who will redshirt the 2009-10 season after transferring from TCU) and redshirt freshman guard Devon Brown. A trio of true freshmen—guard/forward Jelena Antic, forward Carra Coy and guard LaKendra Washington—will also don a Lady Flames uniform for the first time.
