Mike Larsson was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday, following a career outing against No. 6/7 James Madison.

In less than ideal playing conditions, Liberty's Mike Larsson had a banner night against No. 6/7 James Madison, helping the sophomore take home Big South Special Teams Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league on Monday.

Despite steady rains that dropped more than an inch of rain in Lynchburg during Saturday night, Larsson (So., P/K, Monroe, N.C.) finished the contest against James Madison with career-high numbers in each punting statistical category.

The sophomore was called upon to kick a career-high five punts, tallying a career-best 207 total punting yards. For the first time in his 12 career games played, Larsson surpassed the 40-yard average mark, averaging 41.7 yards per kick against the Dukes.

One of his five punts sailed for a career-long 50 yards, bettering his 44-yarder against VMI on Nov. 8, 2008. Finally, three of his five kicks finished inside James Madison's 20-yard line, giving the punter eight of 17 punts inside the 20-yard line in 2009 and 14 total for his career.

This marks the second time in Larsson's career he has been named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week. In 2008, the punter booted four punts for 158 yards (39.5 average) against Western Carolina, helping Liberty picked up a 19-13 road victory over the Catamounts and his first collegiate weekly honor.

Joining Larsson among the Big South's weekly honorees were VMI quarterback Kyle Hughes, who was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week, Coastal Carolina linebacker E.J. Brown, who was tabbed Big South Defensive Player of the Week, and Stony Brook linebacker Kenny Tuiloma, who took home the league's weekly Freshman of the Week honor.

Larsson is the third Flame to be honored by the Big South this year and gives Liberty a conference honoree all four weeks this year.

Mike Brown was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week, following his performance as a wide receiver against West Virginia and as the Flames' starter quarterback at Lafayette. Following the Flames' 35-10 victory over North Carolina Central, running back Aldreakis Allen was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week.

Larsson will have one more week to better his 2009 numbers, before the Flames take a weekend off to prepare for Big South Conference play.

The Flames host West Virginia Wesleyan in a non-conference tilt at Williams Stadium, this Saturday afternoon, when Liberty takes to the turf against the Bobcats at 3:30 p.m.

The contest will mark Liberty's final non-conference game of the year, as the Flames are slated to open league play on Oct. 17, when they host Coastal Carolina at Williams Stadium.
