Liberty's Michael Solbach and Phillip Thompson combined to throw a two-hitter to lead the Flames to a 4-1 win over Wofford, Friday evening at Russell C. King Field in Liberty's season opener. Solbach (R-So., RHP, Woodbridge, Va.) scattered two hits through the first five innings and struck out five to go 1-0 on the season, Thompson (Sr., RHP, Ringgold, Va.) threw four innings of hitless relief to earn his first save of the season. Michael Just (Sr., 2B, Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) staked the Flames to a 1-0 lead when he led off the game with a home run over the left field wall. Liberty then added a solo run in the second inning as Chad Miller (Sr. 3B, Wheat Ridge, Colo.) walked, stole second, and then scored on an overthrow when he attempted to steal third. Wofford cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning as Brandon Waring drew a one-out walk and scored from first on a double down the left field line by Adam Wood. The Flames extended their led in the fifth when Aaron Grijalva (R-So., 1B, Redlands, Calif.) opened the inning by reaching on an error. He stole second and moved to third on a single by Phillip Laurent (Sr., LF, Cantrall, Ill.) before scoring on a suicide squeeze by P. K. Keller (So., CF, St. Petersburg, Fla.). Liberty's added an additional run in the eighth inning as a walk, a single by Errol Hollinger (Fr., C, Upland, Calif.) and an infield ground out by Just. Besides Wood's RBI double in the fourth, Wofford's only other hit was a leadoff single by Zach Pittman to start the fifth. But he was wiped out by a fielder's choice on the next play. Austin Redwine (0-1) took the loss for the Terriers. He allowed five hits in five innings while striking out seven. The Flames begin the season 1-0, while Wofford falls to 2-2. Liberty continues its season-opening weekend series with Wofford again tomorrow afternoon. The first pitch for tomorrow's contest has been moved to 3 p.m. due to expected thunder storms in the Spartanburg area. The two teams will then conclude the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
