Liberty Head Men's Basketball Coach Dale Layer has finalized his coaching staff with the announcement that Brian Joyce will join the basketball program as an assistant coach.

This will be Joyce's second stint working under Layer, after spending one season together at Colorado State. Bookending his time under Layer, Joyce spent nine successful seasons as a head coach at the junior college level, most recently at Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC).

"Brian brings head coaching experience, a tireless work ethic and excellent player relations to our coaching staff," said Layer. "He has achieved success at every stop in his career and brings a great deal of passion to our program. Brian and his family will be a welcomed addition to Liberty Basketball."

Last season, Joyce helped lead the Cougars to one of their best seasons in the last ten years. The Cougars finished 25-7 with the best record in Region IX. WNCC also won the East Sub-region and won 21 of its last 25 games. The Cougars also received votes in the NJCAA national polls the last three weeks of the season.

"I am thrilled about the opportunity to come to Liberty and to be a part of the overall mission of the university," said Joyce. "It is exciting to be on board once again with Coach Layer and his staff as we try to impact kids lives, and have a successful program while doing it."

Joyce has experienced plenty of success at the junior college level. Joyce has a 138-59 record as a head coach at WNCC and Northeastern Junior College. Overall, Joyce has over 11 years of college coaching experience, including a stop at Colorado State and Central Oklahoma as an assistant coach.

Joyce played at Northeastern Junior College (NJC) from 1991-93 and has enjoyed success as a player and a coach at the NJCAA, NAIA, NCAA Division I & II levels. He was an All-Region IX player on a team that won 43 games during his two years as point guard at NJC. As a player, Joyce was a point guard for a state championship team in high school (La Cueva High in Albuquerque, N.M), a sub-region championship team at Northeastern JC, and a Big Sky championship team at Idaho State.

Joyce finished his playing career at Oklahoma Christian and was an all-conference selection as a senior. His success continued as a coach. Joyce was an assistant coach at the Central Oklahoma (UCO), helping the Bronchos win the Lone Star Conference championship, qualify for the national tournament and finished the season ranked No. 4 in the country with 24-5 overall record during his tenure. From UCO, Joyce went on to be the assistant men's basketball coach/sports information director at Colby Community College, which competes in the nationally renowned Jayhawk Conference. During his time, he helped lead Colby to the best league record in school history. In addition, he had four of his recruits go on to play Division I basketball.

Joyce received an associate of arts degree in business administration from NJC, bachelor of science in psychology from Oklahoma Christian and a master of arts in criminal justice from Central Oklahoma. Joyce also has completed 12 hours toward his Ph.D. in educational leadership and administration.

Joyce and his wife Tina, are parents of a son Dalton (10) and a daughter Regan Kate (5).
