Liberty redshirt sophomore Sam Chelanga made a successful final tune-up for the 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday evening. He finished eighth in the fastest men's 5K ever run on U.S. soil, at the Reebok Grand Prix in Randall's Island, N.Y.

After a blistering early pace, Chelanga (Nairobi, Kenya) ended up clocking a time of 13:30.77, his second-fastest effort of the season. The time made Chelanga the No. 1 collegiate 5K performer this weekend, including all four NCAA Division I regionals.

Up front, Kenya's Micah Kogo out-sprinted defending world 5K champion Bernard Lagat of the United States to win the hotly-contested race. Kogo clocked a 13:02.90, with Lagat following closely in 13:03.06.

Chelanga's next race will be the men's 10K final at the 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The four-time All-American will attempt to claim his first national title June 11 at 10:45 p.m. Eastern, at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark.
