Sophomore Clarence Powell will triple jump for the No. 22 Flames at the NCAA Division I East Regional Track & Field Championships, May 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C.

Coming off of a runner-up finish at the 2009 IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Liberty men's track & field team has moved up to No. 22 in the weekly USTFCCCA Top 25 rankings. The national ranking matches the Flames' highest of the season.

Liberty, which has now recorded three consecutive top-two showings at the IC4A outdoor meet, is the top-ranked non-BCS program in the nation. BYU previously held that distinction. The Flames are also the highest-ranked Virginia institution in this week's poll, after overtaking Virginia Tech.

Liberty won a trio of individual titles at the IC4A meet, held this past weekend in Princeton, N.J. Sam Chelanga (R-So., Nairobi, Kenya) won the 5K, Daniel Newell (R-Sr., Roanoke, Va.) repeated as IC4A decathlon champion and Matt Parker (Sr., Rome, N.Y.) took the high jump title. Parker's winning jump, 7-1, set an outdoor school record and moved the Empire State native into a tie for 16th place on the national performance list.

The Flames will return to action May 29-30, when they send seven athletes—Parker, Ryan Bell (Fr., New Wilmington, Pa.), Anthony Bryant (R-Fr., Charlottesville, Va.), Elliot Galeone (R-So., White Hall, Md.), Tim O'Donnell (R-Sr., Hurst, Texas), Clarence Powell (So., Marianna, Fla.) and John Talbert (Fr., Newton, Kan.)—to the NCAA Division I East Regional Track & Field Championships. The two-day meet will be hosted by North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. Meanwhile, Chelanga will run the 5K at the Reebok Grand Prix meet in Randall's Island, N.Y., on May 30.
