Cassie Hendrix was 1-for-2 with a run scored in Liberty's 2-1 loss to UNC Greensboro.

In a contest that started as a pitcher's duel, the Spartans of UNC Greensboro were able to squeak by the Lady Flames, 2-1, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader in Greensboro, N.C., Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans struck first, putting a run on the board in the bottom of the third inning on a single to left by Alex Emeterio, scoring Brittany Ausley from second base.

The UNC Greensboro defense shut down Liberty's bats early, and as starting pitcher Hannah Angel retired the first nine Lady Flames hitters. But Cassie Hendrix put an end to that pattern in the top of the fourth inning, leading off with a single that dropped into short center field.

She stole second on the first pitch offered to J'nae Jefferson, and scored when Jefferson laid down a bunt that got past the pitcher. But after Hendrix crossed the plate to even the score, 1-1, Jefferson was thrown out trying to advance to second.

The Spartans regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the score to 2-1. With two outs, Jewett singled up the middle, and scored on the next play when Emeterio drilled a double deep to right center field.

During the Lady Flames' last scoring opportunity, the Spartans' defense stepped up to make two strong plays, as left fielder Ausley made a leaping catch to take a home run away from Kelly Strickland, and second baseman Lyndsey Mouse made a diving catch on a line drive by Keely McMillon. Amber DePasquale then flied out to center field to end the game, and the Spartans walked away with a 2-1 victory.

UNC Greensboro was led by Emeterio, who was 2-for-3, driving in both Spartan runs.

Hendrix batted 1-for-2 with a run scored for the Lady Flames, while Jefferson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Angel (12-12) picked up the win in the circle, giving up seven hits and striking out eight batters in six complete innings.

Smith (8-12) took the loss, giving up four hits and striking out five batters in the complete game appearance.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 20-29, while the Lady Flames drop to 19-32.

The two squads will face off again this afternoon in Game 2 of today's scheduled doubleheader.
