LU to Take on Radford, UNC Greensboro

The Lady Flames will travel to Radford, Va. tomorrow for a single game against the Highlanders, followed by a non-conference doubleheader in Greensboro, N.C. against the Spartans on Wednesday.

The Lady Flames will conclude a three-game series with Radford tomorrow when they travel to Radford, Va. to face off against the Highlanders in a single game. The contest, originally scheduled for April 22, was postponed due to inclement weather last week. In a doubleheader at the Liberty Softball Field on April 22, Radford swept the Lady Flames, 4-1 and 3-2 in extra innings.

Then, on Wednesday, the Lady Flames will head south to Greensboro, N.C. for a non-conference doubleheader against the Spartans of UNC Greensboro.

The Lady Flames enter the week on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Presbyterian in a three-game series at home, the final games held at Liberty Softball Field this season. With the wins, Liberty moved into third place in the Big South standings.

Senior Beth Bennett leads the Lady Flames, batting .288 on the year with 38 hits, 24 RBIs and eight home runs, while J'nae Jefferson is batting .266 with 37 hits and 13 RBIs. Jefferson belted a game-winning home run in the bottom of the seventh during the final game against Presbyterian on Saturday, lifting the Lady Flames to a 2-1 victory.

Pitcher Tiffani Smith (8-11) set a new school record on Friday, striking out 16 batters in Friday's 3-1 win over the Blue Hose. She posts a 1.97 ERA to lead the Big South, with 136 strikeouts in 145.1 total innings pitched. Sarah Ellis (11-19) picked up two wins last week, and has fanned 120 batters in 170 innings of work, posting a 2.68 ERA.

A Look at Radford

The Highlanders (33-12, 15-2 Big South) have clinched at least a share of the Big South regular season title after sweeping Charleston Southern over the weekend in Charleston, S.C. Radford enters the Liberty matchup on a six-game winning streak.

Leigh Godfrey leads the team, batting .444 with 63 hits, 19 RBIs and 47 runs scored, while Sarah Himan is batting .385 with 55 hits and 29 RBIs.

Chelsea Snooks is 18-6 in the circle for the Highlanders, posting a 2.68 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 154.1 innings pitched.

Liberty is 12-33 all-time against Radford.

A Look at UNC-Greensboro
The Spartans (19-29, 7-11 SoCon) have posted 2009 wins over Furman, Western Carolina and Appalachian State. The team is led by
Kaitlin Merkt, who is batting .338 with 26 hits and 14 RBI, and Alex Emeterio, who boasts a .321 average with 43 hits and 65 RBIs.

UNC Greensboro pitcher Hannah Angel is 11-12 on the year, striking out 92 batters in 139.2 innings of work, and posts a 2.51 ERA.

The Lady Flames are 8-22 all-time against the Spartans, and the two squads split a doubleheader in Lynchburg on March 25, 2008.
Liberty won the first game, 1-0, while UNC Greensboro came back to take the second contest, 4-3.

Strong Week at the Plate

It was a strong week in the batter's box for the Lady Flames, as five starters batted .300 or better. Kelly Strickland batted .417 on the week, while J'nae Jefferson finished at .400.

Series with Radford
The last time Liberty defeated the Highlanders during the regular season at Radford Softball Field was on April 27, 2002, when the Lady Flames walked away with a doubleheader sweep, 3-2 and 3-0.

Dominant in the Circle
The Liberty pitching staff continues to lead the Big South with a 2.48 ERA, and remains the only team in the conference with an ERA below 3.01. The Lady Flames hurlers also lead the Big South in strikeouts (259) and innings pitched (322).
