Liberty got off to a successful start at the 115th running of the Penn Relays, on a cool Thursday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The Lady Flames' 4 x 100 relay quartet qualified for Friday's ECAC final.

The relay team of Olivia Charnuski (Fr., Elmira, Ontario), Alyssa Pegues (Fr., Warner Robins, Ga.), Chenoa Freeman (Jr., Lincoln, Del.) and Andrea Beckles (Sr., Lynchburg, Va.) ran the 29th-fastest time among the 84 participating squads. The Lady Flames' 47.23 clocking put them just ahead of Big South rival Coastal Carolina and into the ECAC final, set for a 1:17 p.m. start, Friday afternoon.

Much later Thursday evening, Josh Edmonds (Jr., Cooperstown, N.Y.) ran the 5,000 meters under the lights. He took advantage of the cool, dry conditions to run a personal-best time of 14:33.15. His effort, which qualifies the junior for the IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships in a second event, netted 11th place in the college section of the 5K. Edmonds had previously posted an IC4A qualifier at the 10,000-meter distance.

Liberty athletes will be in action in two different locations Friday. Clarence Powell (So., Marianna, Fla.) will be the first to get underway at the Penn Relays, as he begins the high jump at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, Sam Chelanga (R-So., Nairobi, Kenya) will run the 10,000 meters at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., at 12:10 a.m. Eastern.
