The Liberty Lady Flames volleyball team headed to VCU in Richmond, Va., this past Sunday, to take part in its first tournament of the spring season. The Lady Flames went 5-3 for the day, with four of those wins coming consecutively to end the afternoon.

The day got off to a bit of a slow start for the Lady Flames, with two losses to William & Mary in the opening contest. Liberty dropped the first set, 14-25, but then battled back in the second set to lose by a narrow margin of 24-26. Rising junior Nicki Scripko stepped up in the second set, tallying five kills with no errors on 10 attempts, for a final hitting percentage of .500.

Big South rival Radford proved to be a tough competitor in the second match of the day, splitting a pair of sets with the Lady Flames. Liberty posted a 25-15 win over the Highlanders, before suffering another narrow loss, 23-25.

After the loss to Radford, the Lady Flames kicked it into high gear and tallied four straight wins to close out the tournament. Included in the stretch were triumphs over Norfolk State (25-23), and UNC Wilmington (25-14).

For the day, rising senior Chelaine McCarty hit .318 with 18 kills, while Scripko led the squad with 20 kills. Defensively, rising sophomore Kelly Haseman came up with a team-high 35 digs during the tournament.

The Lady Flames will be on the road again on April 11 to take part in their second tournament of the spring season, at Virginia Tech.
