For the second time today, Liberty freshman thrower John Talbert has captured a conference award. The Kansas native was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Men's Field Athlete of the Week this afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Talbert (Newton, Kan.) was tabbed co-Big South Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week, along with teammate Sam Chelanga (R-So., Nairobi, Kenya).

Talbert made an immediate impact in the first outdoor meet of his collegiate career, the Lynchburg Invitational on March 21. He won the discus competition by more than 17 feet, stretching the measuring tape to 178-9. Talbert qualified for the NCAA Division I East Regional Championships in the event and claimed the No. 2 spot on Liberty's all-time performance list, trailing only Flames assistant coach Clendon Henderson. Talbert also notched a third-place finish in the hammer, on the strength of an IC4A-qualifying 173-2 effort.

Talbert and freshman javelin specialist Ryan Bell (New Wilmington, Pa.) have helped the Flames compensate for the loss of graduated standout throwers Henderson and Jon Hart from last year's team. Both Talbert and Bell have already punched their tickets for the NCAA Division I East Regional Championships, to be contested in Greensboro, N.C., May 29-30.

The Liberty men's and women's track & field teams will be divided between a pair of meets this weekend. Talbert is entered in the discus and hammer at the Raleigh Relays, slated for Friday and Saturday at N.C. State's Paul Derr Track in Raleigh, N.C. Meanwhile, some of his teammates will travel across the Blue Ridge Mountains for the inaugural VMI/Washington & Lee Track & Field Carnival, to be contested Friday and Saturday in Lexington, Va.
