Rounding the Bases with Ashley Bensinger

Today's "Rounding the Bases" segment highlights sophomore transfer Ashley Bensinger. is running a segment entitled "Rounding the bases," giving softball fans an in-depth look at members of the 2009 squad. Each spotlight features a different player, and the reports will run two to three times per week over the remainder of the season.

Today, the "Rounding the Bases" segment highlights Ashley Bensinger, a sophomore transfer from Newark, Del. Bensinger came to Liberty after one season at Cecil College in North East, Md.

Bensinger has appeared in 20 contests for the Lady Flames this season, two at catcher, six as designated player, five at shortstop and seven as a pinch hitter. She recorded her first Liberty hit in the first game of the season, a double against Cal State Northridge, at the Cathedral City Kickoff in Cathedral City, Calif., on Feb. 6.

In the March 13 game against FAU in Boca Raton, Fla., Bensinger appeared as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, she drilled a double to right center field, driving in a run to give Liberty the 2-1 lead. The Lady Flames ended up falling in 12 innings to the Owls, 7-5, in the longest game in program history.

Bensinger also recorded hits against No. 14 Fresno State, No. 24 Long Beach State, Bethune-Cookman and Hampton. She has tallied eight hits on the year for a .211 batting average.

Bensinger graduated from Red Lion Christian Academy, where she was a four-year letterwinner.

Getting to know Ashley Bensinger

What has been your favorite class at Liberty and why?

Human Biology, because I am in awe of how we are created.

I know it's not good for me, but I love to eat
Sweet potato casserole, Twix bars and banana pie.

What was the best movie you watched over the last year?
The Dark Knight.

I came to Liberty because …
I want to be in a Christian environment and be held accountable for my actions. I love having so many opportunities to grow in my faith and I love to play softball for the Lord.

Who is your favorite Bible character and why?
Peter, the rock, because he always had the courage to preach the gospel even after he denied Jesus three times. It reminds me that I should take every opportunity to testify for Christ, even if I am caught in sin.

My earliest memory while competing in my sport is …
In batting practice, my head coach said if I could hit my assistant coach then she would buy me anything I wanted from the candy store. Well, I hit him square in the nose.

If you could be somebody else for a day, who would you be and why?
Super Woman, so I could help people.

The best part of being a Liberty student-athlete is …
The Christ-centered atmosphere.

My dream job would be …
A government agent who travels the world.

The team that I'm most looking forward to competing against this year is (and why) …
Winthrop, because of their comment in the paper.

What is the best book you have ever read (other than the Bible)?
A Child Called It.

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?
To fly, so I can be the best outfielder and always be on time.

The TV show I can't live without watching each week is (and why) ...
The O.C. I love the witty, sarcastic humor.

If I were named "Coach for a Day", I would make my coaches (and why) …
Sit back and relax, because I'm smart.

My favorite thing about being a part of the Liberty softball team is (and why) …
The fellowship; I love learning and growing together as a team.

If you could have dinner with three people throughout history, who would they be and why?
King David, because to be a woman after God's own heart I should learn from the man after God's own heart. Abraham Lincoln, to learn how he persevered through so many failures. Jesus – self-explanatory.

My personal goals this season are …
To get a starting position, to make the Dean's List, and to have consistent devotion time.

What cartoon character are you most like (and why)?
Olive from Popeye, because I'm clumsy and clueless. And I always have at least two guys fighting over me (kidding).

If someone would look at the songs on my iPod, I would be embarrassed for them to see I have this song …

When you were a child, what did you want to be "when you grew up" and are you pursuing it still as a career/profession after graduation?
I wanted to be a professional soccer player or a police officer. I have considered being a state police officer when I graduate.
