Kaylee West batted 2-for-3 with two doubles as the Lady Flames defeated UNC Wilmington, 4-1, in the Seahawk Classic on Saturday morning.

Liberty freshman Kaylee West batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Lady Flames to a 4-1 victory over UNC Wilmington, Saturday morning, at the Seahawk Classic.

The victory, Liberty's second in a row at this year's Classic, raised the Lady Flames record to 2-6 on the year. The loss drops the homestanding Seahawks to 1-9 in 2009.

After two scoreless innings, Liberty was the first to score in the top of the third when freshman Danielle Howard smacked a single to right field, scoring Jenna Eatmon from third. Howard was then caught stealing to end the half-inning, with the Lady Flames leading 1-0.

Liberty's offense tacked another run onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, when West doubled to left. Beth Bennett then laced a two-strike double to right center, trading places with West and pushing the Lady Flames margin to 2-0.

The Seahawks put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Rachel Sawyer doubled to bring in Jessie Gunter. But the Liberty defense buckled down, and UNC Wilmington left two runners stranded to leave the Liberty margin at one, 2-1.

Liberty extended its lead in the top of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Amber DePasquale led off with a single to left field, followed by an Ashley Bensinger walk and another double from West, scoring both runner and pushing the Liberty lead to its final margin, 4-1.

Howard was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Lady Flames. The Seahawks were led by shortstop Sawyer, who batted 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Sarah Ellis (1-4) picked up her first win of the year in the circle for Liberty, scattering five hits and striking out one batter over 5 1/3 innings of work. Sophomore Tiffani Smith earned the save, pitching 1 2/3 innings and giving up one hit.

Amanda Davenport (1-3) took the loss, pitching four innings and giving up five hits and two earned runs.

The Lady Flames are back in action again today at Noon, in their second match-up with Delaware State at the 2009 Seahawk Classic.
