Daniel Newell, one of the IC4A's top multi-event athletes over the past several years, is this week's ECAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.

Liberty senior Daniel Newell has earned his second award of the day, as a result of his heptathlon performance at this past weekend's Liberty Open. Newell has been tabbed the ECAC Division I Men's Field Athlete of the Week, it was announced this afternoon.

Newell (Roanoke, Va.) scored a career-best 5,346 points at the Liberty Open, finishing in first place by nearly 500 points and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. Newell, who has won both of his heptathlon competitions this season, currently ranks No. 2 on the NCAA's performance list, trailing only R.J. McGinnis of Minnesota.

Newell also qualified for the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships heptathlon, where he will have the opportunity to bolster his IC4A career resume. During Newell's collegiate career, he has notched four top-five finishes in the multi events at the IC4A indoor and outdoor meets, including the 2008 decathlon championship.

Newell and the rest of the Liberty men's and women's track & field teams will be back in action Feb. 6-7, when they travel to University Park, Pa. for the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup.
