Liberty wrapped up the two day Aztec Invitational, falling 3-1 (24-30, 19-30, 30-25, 22-30), against the Highlanders of UC-Riverside Saturday night at Peterson Gym. In game one, both teams exchanged points as the scored was tied at 10 midway through. A Rachel Denton (Jr., Burnet, Texas) kill brought the Lady Flames to within one (21-20), but the Highlanders went on a 9-2 run to close out the game and secure a game one victory. Early on in game two UC-Riverside jumped out to a 10-5 lead; however, Liberty battled back and got to within one (17-16) on a service error by Kelly Crow. The Highlanders responded quickly, tearing off a 13-3 run to earn a game two victory. Trailing by two games, the Lady Flames looked to win game three and force a forth. Autum Poorman (Jr., Mingoville, Pa.) aided that pursuit as her kill knotted things up at 12. Later in the game freshman Kendall Nichols (Fr., Hoover, Ala.) rallied off four-straight point giving Liberty a 26-25 advantage as they never looked back scoring the next four points and sealing a Lady Flames' victory. The Highlanders responded to Liberty's game three victory as they jumped out to an early 14-8 lead. The Lady Flames would get to within three, but that's as close as they would be able to get as UC-Riverside ended the game on a 9-4 run to win game four and take the match, 3-1. Liberty was paced by Jessica Nelson (So., Tokyo, Japan) as she collected 18 kills and nine digs. Janell Migeot (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded 12 kills, while hitting .346 for the match and Lara Bartolomeo (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) racked-up a season-high 49 assists. The Lady Flames return to action on September 9 as they participate in the William and Mary Tournament and face former Big South foe Elon at 9 a.m.
