The Blue team took the final two-game fall "Super Regional" series from the Red team, concluding fall practice for the Liberty Flames baseball team last Wednesday and Thursday.

With a game being dropped from the series due to rain earlier in the week, the Blue team won the set on run differential, 3-1.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Blue captured the first game of the series, 2-0. The Blue team was led by the pitching efforts of newcomers Zane Bator (Jr., RHP/1B, Moses Lake, Wash.) and Carter Browning (Jr., RHP, Ada, Okla.), who combined to shut out the Red squad. Bator opened the seven-inning contest with five scoreless frames. The right-hander handcuffed the Red hitters, allowing two hits and striking out two. Browning did not yield a hit over the final two frames after coming on in relief in the sixth inning.

Catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) had two hits in the contest for the Blue team, including a triple. He also scored a run. In addition, outfielder Jeff Jefferson (So., Danville, Va.) was 2-for-2 with a RBI and Austin Poretz (Fr., INF/RHP, Lothian, Md.) added two hits for the Blue.

Red starter Cody Brown (Sr., RHP/1B, Boca Raton, Fla.) took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits in four innings of work. He struck out one. Brett Curll (Jr., RHP, Virginia Beach, Va.) followed with two scoreless frames. The righty allowed three hits and struck out four batters. Curran Redal (LHP/OF, Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) finished for the Red with one inning of two-hit, no run work.

Kizuku Scott (Fr., INF, Hampton, Va.) had both hits for the Red squad.

In the final game on Thursday, the game ended in a 1-1 tie after seven innings. The Red team jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the contest, as Jonathan Blasher (Fr., INF, Clarksville, Md.) doubled and later scored on error.

The Blue tied it in the fourth inning. P.J. Jimenez (Jr., INF, Yucaipa, Calif.) ripped a solo home run to knot the contest at 1-1.

After the blast, neither team could break through for a run against strong relief pitching, as the game was stopped after seven frames.

For the second straight afternoon, Blue pitchers did not yield an earned run in the game. Starter Mark Swanson (Jr., RHP, Buford, Ga.), seeing his first action of the fall, did not allow a hit and struck out three over the first two innings. Reliever Steven Evans (So., LHP, Amherst, Va.) yielded the only run for the Red, an unearned tally, over 3 1/3 innings of work. He struck out four Red batters. Lefty hurler Shawn Teufel (Jr., Tequesta, Fla.) finished up for the Blue with 1 2/3 frames of scoreless relief, striking out two.

Red starter Dustin Umberger (Sr., RHP, Hummelstown, Pa.) gave up the lone Blue run on two hits over the first four innings. He struck out five. Chase Vaden (Jr., RHP, Lynch Station, Va.) did not yield a run in 2/3 innings of work. Joe Steinwedell (Jr., RHP, Encinitas, Calif.) finished the contest for the Red, with 2 1/3 scoreless innings. The right-hander yielded three hits and struck out two.

Jimenez and Tim Rotola (Sr., OF, Wichita, Kan.) paced the Blue team with two hits apiece.

Liberty opens its 2009 season on Feb. 20 against Ole Miss at the Coca Classic in Mobile, Ala. In the season opening weekend tournament, the Flames will play four games. Besides the season opener with Ole Miss, Liberty will play host South Alabama twice and Mercer.
