Newcomer Kizuku Scott had seven hits in three games for the Red squad.

With a 12-1 victory, the Red squad captured the first of two "Super Regionals" from the Blue squad Monday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.

The best-of-three series kicked off the last week of fall practice for the Liberty Flames baseball program. The team will be split into two squads again today, as the Flames begin their second "Super Regional." The teams will play two games, one at 2:30 p.m. today and one at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

After having the first three-game set pushed back to Saturday due to rain last Friday, the Blue rallied from a 5-1 deficit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the contest at 5-5. Freshman Austin Portez (INF, Lothian, Md.) lined a two-run single to right to knot the game and send it to extra innings.

In the 10th inning, the Blue team scored the winning run on a walk with the bases loaded for a 6-5 win.

Senior right-hander Dustin Umberger (Hummelstown, Pa.) started for the Red team, and allowed one run on five hits over the first five innings. He struck out five.

Blue starter Steven Evans (So., LHP, Amherst, Va.) worked five frames as well, allowing two runs on three hits. The lefty struck out seven Red batters.

Kizuku Scott (Fr., INF, Hampton, Va.) went 3-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored for the Red team. Teammate Casey Brown (Jr., OF, Bakersfield, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Matt Williams (Fr., INF, Franklin, Tenn.) also hit a home run for the Red team.

Nathan Thompson (Jr., C, Stoneville, N.C.) paced the Blue by going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Blue third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) and outfielder James Hipp (Jr., Uvalde, Texas) each added two hits and a RBI.

Sunday afternoon, the Red team evened the three-game series at 1-1, with a 6-1 victory.
Williams, Scott and Chris McDougal (Fr., Util., Poquoson, Va.) had two hits apiece for the Red team in the win.

Right-hander Joe Steinwedell (Jr., Encinitas, Calif.) picked up the victory with 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He scattered three hits and struck out six, after coming on for Red starter Chase Vaden (Jr., LHP, Lynch Station, Va.). Vaden allowed one run on two hits, striking out two and walking two over 3 2/3 innings.

Blue starter Shawn Teufel (Jr., LHP, Tequesta, Fla.) allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits over four innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Bream had two hits for the Blue squad.

In the deciding game 3, the Red team plated four runs in its first at bat and never looked back for a 12-1 win and the series victory, two games to one, Monday.

The Red squad used big innings en route to its victory. Besides the four-run first frame, the Red team scored three in the fourth inning and chased home four more in the sixth. In addition, the victors took advantage of four errors by the Blue squad.

Blue starter Andrew Wilson (Sr., RHP, Cary, N.C.) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Red starter McDougal picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Left-hander Lance Howe (Fr., Woodbridge, Va.) took over with two outs in the fourth for McDougal and pitched scoreless 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one.

Teammate Justin Richardson (Fr., OF, Lehigh Acres, Fla.) added four RBIs with two hits and a three-run home run.
