Nicki Scripko earned her first career Big South Player of the Week honor on Monday.

After leading the Liberty volleyball team to road wins in its first two Big South matches of the 2008 season, sophomore outside hitter Nicki Scripko has been recognized as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Volleyball Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Scripko (Fayetteville, N.C.) totaled a team-high 35 kills and ranked second on the squad with 27 digs, helping the Lady Flames defeat Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina over the weekend. Liberty, now 11-4 overall, was one of three Big South teams (also Gardner-Webb and High Point) to start the conference season with a pair of victories.

Gardner-Webb players captured the Big South's other two weekly honors, as Laura Wilcox was named Big South Freshman of the Week and Katie Matykowski was tabbed Big South Libero of the Week.

Scripko opened her weekend with a double-double during the Lady Flames' 3-0 triumph at Charleston Southern on Friday. She tallied a team-high 13 kills and added 11 digs versus the Lady Buccaneers.

The sophomore then posted even better numbers during Saturday's contest with Coastal Carolina, a 3-1 Liberty win. Scripko finished with a career-high 22 kills, becoming the first Lady Flame to record 20 kills since Sept. 15, 2007. She also contributed 16 digs, completing her third double-double in a row and sixth of the season. With the Lady Flames and Chanticleers tied at one set apiece, Scripko stepped up in sets three and four, hitting .480 with 15 kills and 10 digs.

For the season, Scripko leads the Lady Flames and ranks fourth among Big South players with 172 kills. She also ranks second on the Liberty roster with 14 aces. Although the Big South Player of the Week award was the first of Scripko's career, she was a four-time Big South Freshman of the Week in 2007.

Scripko and her teammates will play their 2008 home opener Tuesday at 7 p.m., when VCU visits the Vines Center. The Lady Flames, who have played their first 15 matches away from Lynchburg, will attempt to extend an 11-match home winning streak.
