The Lady Flames softball team will host cross-town opponent Lynchburg College on Saturday, opening up the team's 2008 fall schedule.

The Lady Flames will welcome the Hornets to the Liberty Softball Field for a Saturday morning doubleheader, with the opening game scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

In regular-season action, Liberty is a perfect 4-0 in its previous meetings with Lynchburg College. In 2006, the Lady Flames swept the Hornets, 5-1 and 11-1, on April 19, followed by another twinbill taking for Liberty on April 17, 2007, when Liberty won 8-3 and 9-1.

The Hornets are coming off one of the best years in program history, as they finished the 2008 campaign with a 39-8 overall record.

Lynchburg College claimed the ODAC's regular season and tournament titles, earning a berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second-straight year. The squad won the Fayetteville Regional and finished the year ranked No. 6 in the final NFCA Division III poll.

Liberty will close out its fall softball schedule on Oct. 10 and 11, when the squad travels to Salem, Va., to compete in the Virginia Tech Fall Tournament. Liberty has annually participated in the Virginia Tech Fall Tournament and captured the title in 2005.

The Lady Flames will open the two-day event against host Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. on Oct. 10, followed by an 8 p.m. match-up with Longwood. On Oct. 11, Liberty faces East Tennessee State at 1 p.m., while the event will conclude with its championship game at 3 p.m.

Virginia Tech concluded its 2008 season with the program's first-ever run to the Women's College World Series, capping off a program-best 49-19 season. The Hokies captured the ACC championship and won the Knoxville Regional, closing the year ranked No. 8 in the final NFCA Division I poll.

Liberty is coming off its own championship game run in 2008, as the Lady Flames capped off the season by making the program's fourth appearance in a Big South Softball Championship title game.

The Lady Flames return 10 letterwinners from last year's squad, while Liberty's roster sports 10 new faces for the upcoming 2009 campaign. Senior Beth Bennett looks to lead Liberty from the plate, as the senior captured VaSID all-state honors after posting career numbers with a .328 batting average, 10 doubles, seven home runs and 26 RBIs.
