Defender Brittany Tyson returns for her senior season in 2008

Liberty University's women's soccer team has been chosen to finish third in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll, as voted on by the league's head women's soccer coaches. The panel also voted Coastal Carolina senior midfielder Ashleigh Gunning the league's Preseason Player of the Year. Both selections were announced today by the Big South Conference office.

Liberty received one first-place vote and garnered 75 points in being selected to finish third in the conference standings. The Lady Flames, led by 2007 all-conference performers Amy Oberlin and Brittany Tyson, will begin a new era of Liberty soccer this season under new head coach Jessica Celi. Oberlin was named to the VaSID All-State squad for the second time last season and was named to the All-Big South team for the third time, the last two years to the first team. Tyson received her first selection to the all-state team and was also selected for the All-Big South first team in 2007. Along with the two seniors, Liberty returns 15 letterwinners from last year's team.

The 10-member panel tabbed Coastal Carolina to win the conference championship this season. The Chanticleers, who topped the 2007 Big South Conference regular-season standings, were named the top team on three ballots and received 90 points in being selected the conference favorite.

Defending Big South Conference champion High Point, which also collected three first place votes, was picked second with 83 points. After Liberty in third, Charleston Southern was selected fourth with 73 points and three first place votes. Radford (56), Winthrop (52) and Gardner-Webb (50) were picked fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. UNC Asheville (32), Presbyterian (22) and VMI (17) round out the poll.

Gunning was selected as the Big South Preseason Player of Year, after garnering five first-place votes and 19 points. The redshirt senior midfielder was tabbed the 2007 Big South Player of the Year.

The Lady Flames begin the 2008 season on Aug. 22 at Longwood. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Celi's squad will open its home slate on Sept.12 by hosting Navy.  The Big South Women's Soccer Championship is slated for Nov. 6-9 in High Point, N.C.
