For the second straight year, the Liberty men's and women's outdoor track teams have both received Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards, it was announced today.

The men's squad also captured the Big South team title for the second consecutive year, at the New Balance Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested April 17-19 in Rock Hill, S.C. The Lady Flames, who shared the sportsmanship honor with High Point, placed third at the conference meet.

Liberty has now won 16 Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards, which are voted upon by the conference's student-athletes, since the awards program was instituted in 2005-06. Head coach Brant Tolsma's men's and women's cross country and track & field programs have combined for 11 sportsmanship distinctions over the time span.

The Liberty men's golf team also earned a Big South Team Sportsmanship Award today, becoming the sixth Flames squad so honored this season. The men's cross country team, women's indoor track & field team and volleyball team were previously recognized.

At the conclusion of the 2007-08 athletic season, the Big South Conference's Institutional Sportsmanship Award will be announced. An institution's sport winners count towards the Institution Sportsmanship Award and the winner is determined on a system recognizing the highest percentage of the maximum possible points each institution is capable of achieving in that year. The institution with the highest percentage will win the award. VMI has won the Big South's Institutional Sportsmanship Award the last two years.
