Liberty sophomore Evans Kigen, who claimed a convincing victory in the men's 10K, last Thursday at the 114th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week.

Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) captured the first conference weekly award of his Liberty career after winning his third race in seven days. The Big South steeplechase and 5,000-meter champion, Kigen clocked a personal-best 10,000-meter time of 29:16.12 at the Penn Relays to triumph by 20 seconds and earn a coveted Penn Relays watch.

The effort provisionally qualified Kigen for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships and ranks No. 23 on the NCAA national performance list. The Kenyan is now the second-fastest 10K runner in program history, trailing only Josh McDougal (Peru, N.Y.). Kigen also became Liberty's first Penn Relays champion since McDougal won the 5K in 2006.

The Flames will be divided between a pair of meets this weekend. Liberty will wrap up the home portion of its 2008 outdoor schedule tomorrow, when the Flames host the Liberty Twilight Qualifier at 3 p.m. On Sunday, selected male and female athletes will compete in the Duke Twilight Meet in Durham, N.C.
