The Liberty Lady Flames volleyball team notched victories in three out of its four matches during the VCU spring tournament, Saturday in Richmond, Va.

Liberty toppled the host VCU Rams in the first match, 25-22 and 25-18. The team, led by senior outside hitter Jessica Nelson's 11 kills, 12 digs and three solo blocks, hit .228 in the day's opening match.

The VCU Alumni also fell to the Lady Flames in the next contest, 25-22 and 28-26. The Liberty netters served up five aces in the match. Sophomore Karyl Bacon paced the offense with eight kills, while both Nelson and Nicki Scripko dug up 11 balls.

Liberty easily took the following match against Christopher Newport, 25-18 and 25-15. Head coach Shane Pinder's squad posted four aces, hit .212 and put down 24 kills. Middle blocker Chelaine McCarty led the effort, hitting .461 and notching seven kills. Scripko tallied 10 of the team's 34 digs during the match.

William & Mary halted the Lady Flames' winning streak in the fourth and final match of the day. After falling short in a marathon first game, 36-34, Liberty took the second game by a 25-21 count. Setter Kallie Corbin posted a double-double with 39 assists and 15 digs, and McCarty hit .500 with a dozen kills, but it simply was not enough. The Lady Flames came up just short in the third and deciding game, 15-13.

Liberty will head to Harrisonburg, Va., April 19, for its last of four spring tournaments. The event will be hosted by James Madison.
