On This Date: Liberty Hires Ritchie McKay

It has been five years since Ritchie McKay returned to Liberty as head coach to lead the Liberty's basketball program. McKay took over a program that had 97 losses during the five previous seasons. Fast forward to 2020, McKay has led the Flames to 115 wins, two NCAA Tournament berths and four ASUN conference titles. Liberty has 102 victories in the last four seasons, which ranks 20th in Division I during that span. Here is some of Liberty's highlights since McKay returned to Liberty.

  • In the last two seasons, Liberty has won 59 games, which ranks No. 2 in the country.
  • Liberty won a school-record 30 games in 2020.
  • In Liberty's first two seasons in the ASUN Conference, Liberty has claimed a share of the ASUN Regular Season titles in both campaigns.
  • In the last two seasons, Liberty has received votes in the final AP Top 25 Poll.
  • Liberty finished at No. 4 in the 2020 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll.
  • Ritchie McKay was named the 2020 ASUN Co-Coach of the Year.
  • McKay was named the 2020 NABC District Three Coach of the Year.
  • In its first year in the ASUN Conference, Liberty won the 2019 ASUN Conference Championship.
  • McKay led Liberty to its first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament, defeating Mississippi State in 2019.
  • McKay was named the 2019 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year.
  • McKay was named the 2016 Big South Coach of the Year.
