Flames to Play Early Week Matches Against No. 22 UCLA and San Diego

The Liberty men's tennis team will play matches against No. 22 UCLA and versus San Diego, early this week.

The Flames (8-4) will take on the 22nd-ranked UCLA Bruins (8-4), Monday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. Eastern. The match was originally slated for Tuesday but was moved up to Monday due to rain in the forecast.

Liberty will then battle against the San Diego Toreros (7-3) on Wednesday. First serve will take place at 4 p.m. Eastern at the Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. The Flames were originally scheduled to play SMU in a neutral-site match on Wednesday in Manhattan Beach, Calif., but that match was cancelled.

The Flames split a pair of matches last weekend, falling 4-3 at No. 38 Virginia and defeating Bellarmine 7-0 at home. UCLA enters the contest riding a four-match winning streak. The Bruins most recently topped Oregon 4-3 on the road, March 1. Monday's match marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

San Diego will has won its last four matches. The Toreros defeated Pacific 4-1 on the road, Sunday. This will be the first-ever dual match between the two schools.     

Flames News and Notes

  • Monday's match against UCLA will be the Flames' second-ever meeting with a Pac-12 school. Liberty competed at Washington last season (Feb. 1, 2019), its first-ever match against a Pac-12 school, with the Huskies prevailing 4-3.
  • Freshman Deji Thomas-Smith was the lone Flame to win two singles matches on Saturday when Liberty took on No. 38 Virginia (road) and Bellarmine (home). Thomas-Smith holds a 5-2 spring singles record. He is 2-0 in the No. 3 slot and 3-2 in the No. 6 position. 
  • Liberty's last dual match in California came at San Diego State on March 21, 2018. The Flames defeated the Aztecs 5-2 in what was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
  • The Flames competed in two fall tournaments in the state of California. Junior Nicaise Muamba played in the Oracle ITA Masters event, Sept. 26-28 in Malibu, Calif. Muamba and freshman Goncalo Ferreira competed at the Malibu 25k ITF Futures event in Malibu, Calif., Nov. 4.
  • The Flames are 3-3 on the road and 5-1 at home in 2020.
  • UCLA features two ranked singles players in No. 4 Keegan Smith and No. 21 Govind Nanda. Muamba was the most recent Liberty player to garner a national ranking in singles. He was tabbed the No. 65-ranked singles player in the nation in the 2019-20 Oracle/ITA Division I preseason rankings. Smith and Nanda of the Bruins are also the 29th-ranked doubles pairing in the country.
