Liberty Lady Flames lacrosse junior midfielder Mia Toscano has been named the ASUN Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.

This is the first ASUN weekly award for Toscano and second career weekly honor. The Venetia, Pa., native was named Big South Freshman of the week on March 20, 2018. Liberty has now featured the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week in consecutive weeks, after sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Soriero received the honor last week.

"I'm really excited for Mia to be recognized this week for her efforts. She is a constant for us, and she does a lot of things throughout the game that aren't statable," said Liberty head coach Kelly Nangle. "I'm excited to continue to watch her grow as the season goes on!"

Toscano contributed seven caused turnovers and six ground balls in a pair of games against Winthrop and at Richmond, last week. The midfielder also scored five goals and added one assist, six points and seven draw controls.

In the Lady Flames' 17-9 victory against Winthrop on Wednesday, the junior matched a career high with five caused turnovers and scooped up four ground balls. She also scored a pair of goals and won five draw controls.

In Liberty's contest against the Richmond Spiders, who are now ranked No. 20 in the country and defeated No. 6 Virginia last week, Toscano collected a pair of ground balls and had two caused turnovers as well. Toscano and the Liberty defense forced 23 Spider turnovers. Richmond entered the game No. 1 in the country in clearing percentage (.965), but the Lady Flames' limited Richmond to a 70.8 percent (17-of-24) conversion rate on clearing chances. Toscano also notched her fourth career hat trick in the game and added an assist.

In five games this season, Toscano ranks second on the team in caused turnovers (10) and tied for second in ground balls (10). She currently ranks 25th in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.00). The junior is also second on the team in goals (10), third in points (12) and third in draw controls (18).

This is the second time in program history the Lady Flames have featured ASUN Defensive Players of the Week in back-to-back weeks. In 2019, goalkeeper Katherine Widrick (Feb. 12) and midfielder Brianna McCaffrey (Feb. 19) were named conference defensive player of the week in consecutive weeks.

Toscano and Liberty (2-3) will host the Robert Morris Colonials (3-1), Thursday afternoon. First draw is slated for 1 p.m. at the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
