(L-R): Anders Janes, Felix Lawrence, Makenzy Mizera
A trio of Liberty underclassmen earned ASUN Conference weekly awards on Wednesday, including redshirt sophomore Anders Janes (Men's Field Athlete of the Week), true freshman Felix Lawrence (Men's Freshman of the Week) and sophomore Makenzy Mizera (Women's Field Athlete of the Week).
A native of Victoria, Minn., Janes garnered his first career ASUN Men's Field Athlete of the Week award after being named Men's Freshman of the Week twice in 2019. He placed third in the men's pole vault at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational with an indoor personal-best 16-6 clearance. The top performance in the ASUN Conference this season, Janes' clearance ranks No. 4 all-time in ASUN history and No. 7 all-time at Liberty.
Lawrence claimed his first ASUN weekly notation after a busy and successful Saturday at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational. He helped Liberty win the men's 4 x 400 relay with a season-best time of 3:12.28, placed third in the 60 hurdles final (personal-best 8.00) and came in eighth in his collegiate 400-meter dash debut (48.80). Lawrence now ranks No. 2 in program history behind All-American teammate Jovaine Atkinson in the 60 hurdles. Meanwhile, the 4 x 400 relay quartet, which also featured Brad Smalley, Jahquez Durham and Christian Lyon, sits No. 3 all-time in the ASUN and No. 4 all-time for the Flames.
Mizera traveled to Albuquerque, N.M., for the USATF Indoor Championships and found success in the Land of Enchantment. She placed seventh in the women's triple jump (school-record 41-10.75) and took 12th in the long jump (19-3.5). Mizera's triple jump effort added seven inches to her own school record and enabled her to climb to third place in ASUN history for the event. The Maryville, Mo., native has now won a pair of ASUN Women's Field Athlete of the Week awards this season and three for her career (also May 8, 2019 and Jan. 22, 2020).
Liberty is currently preparing to host the 2020 ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for Feb. 28-29 at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. Both the Flames and Lady Flames took home team titles during their inaugural ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships appearance a year ago.
