How It Happened
• The Monarchs opened up a 1-0 lead in the early going after wins at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, respectively. ODU junior Jannik Giesse and redshirt junior Tomislav Podvinski cruised to a 6-1 triumph over Flames sophomore Ian Sturgill and freshman Deji Thomas-Smith on court three, handing the Liberty duo its first loss of the spring campaign.
• Trailing 5-4 on court two, ODU's Francois Musitelli and Younes Lalami claimed the next three games in defeating Liberty's Josh Wilson and Goncalo Ferreira 7-5 for a 1-0 Monarchs advantage.
• After sitting out the doubles session, the Monarchs' Oliver Tobisch (No. 6 singles) bested Thomas-Smith of the Flames in consecutive sets (6-0, 6-1) to push the home side's lead to 2-0.
• ODU's Giesse won in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) on court four over his counterpart, Liberty's Ferreira, to draw the hosts within one point of victory at 3-0.
• Both Maldoner and Podvinski of the Monarchs scored identical 6-1, 7-6 decisions over the Flames' Wilson (No. 2 singles) and senior Chase Burton (No. 3 sinlges). Maldoner's win was the match clincher and made it 4-0, while Podvinski overcame a 5-4 deficit in the second set to best Burton in a tiebreaker and bolster the ODU lead to 5-0.
• Marques Da Silva's win over Vidal came after the Flames newcomer lost the first set 6-0. The native of Brazil won 12 games over the final two sets, compared to just five for the ODU sophomore from Italy. Marques Da Silva has won six straight singles bouts, three of which have come in three sets.
• Musitelli of the Monarchs and Muamba of the Flames split their first two sets and saw the final set go to a tiebreaker, which Musitelli prevailed in for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 win to close out the 6-1 home triumph.
• ODU is now 10-0 all-time against Liberty. The last time the two programs had met prior to Friday was in 2011, also a 6-1 home win by the Monarchs.
• Liberty fell to 1-2 on the road with the loss. The Flames are 3-1 at home, this spring.
